Johnston, Iowa is a city located in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The city was founded in 1851 and named for General James Johnston (1786-1863), who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as Commandant of Fort Leavenworth. As an agricultural center, Johnston became one of the most important cities in central Iowa during the early 20th century. The area now encompassing Johnston was first settled by Native Americans in the 1820s and 1830s. Johnston has many businesses that are important to its economy including KFC/ Wendy's restaurant which is located across from Town Hall; Bookstore & Cafe; Big 8 Sporting Goods; TRL Ford dealership; Hancock Implement dealership; Dairy Queen; Methodist Episcopal Church (Church Street); Grange #527A - home to over 100 cows that produce milk for local grocery stores and further distribution into neighboring cities like Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.; Presbyterian Church (Moses Avenue); several schools including high school (Grange School #527B), middle school (School District #444), elementary school (K-8th grade),and two community centers which serve as library facilities for both adults and children.; numerous churches such as First Baptist Church(Church Street) or Methodist Episcopal Church(Moses Avenue). This small but thriving community has gone through many changes over time but always remains committed to its citizens, their families, friends, church services and causes close to their hearts!

Johnston, Iowa is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1871 as a post office and has since become a small agricultural community with a rich history. The town is named after General James Johnston who fought in the Mexican-American War and was later an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. Johnston began as a small post office on the banks of the Des Moines River. In 1871, it became part of the new state of Iowa when it was created from parts of Minnesota and Illinois. The town had only five residents when it incorporated as a municipality in 1907. By then, Johnston had become known for its cheese production and livestock raising; however, those industries are no longer major contributors to its economy today. The first settler to arrive in Johnston were John Waddell and his family who arrived around 1867. Waddell built himself a cabin on what is now Park Drive which he called "The Gables." He also raised cattle and grew crops until 1870 when he decided to move westward into what is now Polk County to escape what he saw as an oppressive climate back east. He settled near present day downtown Johnston on land that he purchased from Danish immigrants for $1 per acre (or $2 per head). In 1907, Johnston incorporation resulted from citizens initiative which permitted townsfolk to petition for charters with local governments if they felt their village could not handle itself adequately without assistance from outside entities such as taxes or roadsides maintenance funds. As time passed, Johnston continued to grow due to its natural resources including coal mined near present day Beloit and oil extracted off of Raccoon Creek north of town (the area now known as Clearwater). By 2000, the population of Johnsontown had reached 1,100 residents while Johnston proper had shrunk by 50 percent due largely to loss of jobs related to these two industries combined with other extenuating factors such as aging infrastructure and dwindling tax revenue resulting from increased interstate highway prostitution Traffic!
