Johnston, Iowa was founded in 1871 by a group of farmers who wanted to establish a town that would be "a place where the people of Johnston could come and have their say." The community grew quickly, and soon there were businesses, churches, schools and homes. In 1896, the first gun store opened in Johnston. The store was one of the first in Iowa to sell firearms. It continued to operate until 1978. Over time, Johnston became known for its firearms industry. This included both Manufacturer's products (such as Smith & Wesson) and importers (such as Winchester). In addition, the community produced several thousand handguns and rifles over the years. Some of these guns are still available today. In 1978, Johnston was renamed Cedar Rapids after Mayor James Sheehan persuaded Congress to pass a bill recognizing Iowa's capital city as such. The designation helps promote economic development within the city while also highlighting its firearm history.

As part of Sioux City-Johnson's growth, a new high school was constructed adjacent to Interstate 80 which replaced an earlier elementary school that had been destroyed by fire In 1925; prior to this, only residents of Johnson had access to public education within their city limits while citizens of Sioux City received private schools within their borders The lumber industry has been an important part of Johnston since early days, with many mills located around town including Pritchard Lumber Company (now Unicoastal Lumber), Smith Mill #2 (now obsolete), Stevenson Mill #1 (now defunct), and Hargrave Mills Ltd.. A sawmill known as Dowling Sawmills closed down operations in 1984 but parts have been preserved for future use at the nearby Dowling Wood Products mill complex which reopened in 2009 as Dowling Industries Inc., specializing in wood preservation and restoration
