Ammunition manufacturers began shipping supplies to Johnston, which helped make the town one of the most prosperous in Iowa during that time period. The Johnston Massacre took place on October 14, 1911 when three gunmen stormed into the home of James Kapp and his family, shooting and killing six people including Kapp’s wife and two children before escaping with their weapons. This event has been cited as one of the worst massacres in Iowa history and is still considered a mystery today.

The name Johnston comes from James Johnston, an early settler in what is now Johnston County. He named his farm and town after his brother-in-law, John Ferguson, who had also come to the area in 1847. The town was platted on February 17, 1848 by Elisha Bliss and others under the name of "Fergusonstown". Johnston became part of the Union Territory of Des Moines following Iowa's admission to the Union on August 29, 1846. On July 1, 1851, it became a city when settlers platted a new town on the west side of State Street just south of present-day Polk Avenue. The first mayor was Wm.[?] Hildebrandt and City Councilors were Edwin[?]. Davenport and Wm.? Fenton (2nd). The first store was built on Second Street by A[?] Sellers with partners P[ercy] M?ller and S[eville]. In 1865 Jno.? Cook opened a grocery store at Third Street corner Main which remain as one of Johnston's most important businesses until they closed in 1978. In 1861 the American Civil War began; Johnston residents took up arms against General Robert E Lee's Confederate army as part of the 4th Iowa Infantry Regiment fighting for General Ulysses S Grant's armies during that conflict. Many men from Johnston enlisted or fought in battles such as Gettysburg or Vicksburg where they received commendations from their units or friends back home. Afterward many men returned to their homes to rebuild their lives while some continued military service through Reconstruction times until America regained its democracy in 1948. The city experienced significant growth during this time with construction projects such as Veterans Memorial Park being completed along State Street between First and Third Streets which helped increase property values across downtown areas while also creating jobs for local workers throughout those years; however today much redevelopment remains ongoing within downtown areas including new housing developments as well as businesses showcasing recent renovated properties across several blocks near State College Boulevard including several high technology companies currently headquartered there

In addition to its agricultural and lumber industries, Johnston also produced brewing beer for local consumption and served as the capital of Iowa during the early days of statehood. Johnston is located at 45°29′N 95°59′W, about 20 miles north of Des Moines and 10 miles east of Waterloo. The town straddles the Mississippi River on both sides, making it an ideal location for river commerce. The name Johnston comes from John A. Johnston’s father-in-law, James Murtagh, who had bought property in what is now Johnston in 1841. The first post office was established in 1847, serving residents of neighboring Cedar Rapids; however, it was closed by 1848 because mail service from Iowa City was better then at that time. The first store opened in 1850 under the name “Johnston Lumber and Box Store”; this business continued until 1907 when it became known as the “Johnston Grain Store” due to its connection with the grain industry. In 1898, a new courthouse replaced an earlier structure burned down in 1897 while renovations were being made to that building vacated by the Jesse James gang during their escape from prison two years earlier (see below). In 1902–1903, local builders erected a large brick schoolhouse which still stands today on Main Street near where Interstate 80 intersects with Highway 66B (formerly US 72) just outside Johnston proper. This building served as primary educational Facilities for young students between grades K-12 up until 1978 when all public schools were consolidated into Des Moines Public Schools District No 1 . Classes were originally held inside this building until 1955 when a new high school was built adjacent to Business High School on North Elm Street across from Interstate 80/Highway 66B). That same year saw the opening of Grange Hall – also located on Main Street – which served as social hall for community members and their families until 1978 when it too became part of Des Moines Public Schools District No 1 . In 1957–1958 a massive renovation project began on downtown Johnson City replacing most all original brick buildings with modern concrete structures designed by starchitects Tower Building Company after observing similar projects done elsewhere throughout America (see photo above). At approximately $2 million dollars dollars total cost including equipment & labor costs only 6% or $60 thousand dollars over budget resulted in almost complete re-working of entire downtown Johnson City including replacement or enlargement of 5 blocks along Main Street (+ 2 blocks south along First Avenue), installation of 3 skylights atop NOW State Capitol Building (& adjoining tower), completion & dedication of brand new 600 sq ft library/heat plant containing video graphics terminals/display rooms/conference room capable seating up to 350 people plus cloakroom/entertainment area attached thereto) All construction project completed within one year having saved taxpayer money over 2 dozen jobs!
