Johnston, Iowa is a small town in Douglas County on the border of Illinois and Minnesota. It was founded in 1854 by John Johnston, a fur trader. The town grew rapidly during the mid-19th century due to its location along the Mississippi River as well as its natural resources. By 1870, Johnston had become one of the most important towns in Douglas County. In 1892, Johnston was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant after he became President of the United States. In 1937, Johnston was merged with neighboring Ames to form a new city named after Grant. Today, Johnston remains an important center for farming and ranching in Douglas County.

Johnston has experienced growth since its annexation into Cedar Rapids; most notable have been new development around Interstate 580 and education facilities including Prairie View High School and Iowa State University's Ames Campus which opened in 2001. The economy has diversified with many businesses being founded within the past few decades including medical marijuana dispensaries and more recently industrial hemp production
