Johnston, Iowa was founded in 1847 by John A. Johnston and his family. The town grew rapidly from its original location on the banks of the Missouri River, and by 1880 it had a population of 6,000. Johnston was named in honor of General James Johnston, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as governor of Texas before moving to Mexico City to lead an army against Generalifex Blanco. In 1847, John A. Johnston emigrated from Scotland to Iowa and began farming with his parents. He became a successful business man and political leader in the early years of Iowa's history. In 1865, Johnston married Julia Childs and they continued farmsteading until Julia's death in 1922. Their five children - Donald (1915-2005), Angus (1920-2008), Fiona (1924-2002), Sarah (1927-2006) and Alasdair (1931-2004) - went on to become important members of their community and beyond. They are buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in nearby West Des Moines. Johnston was one of the most heavily populated towns on the Missouri River during the early 1800s due to its location close to water resources and easy access to transportation. By 1870, it had grown sufficiently that it petitioned for incorporation into Des Moines County; however, because it did not have a white majority at that time, incorporation was granted only after much opposition from neighbors who felt they were being taken advantage of by Johnston’s growing population – which numbered more than 10 percent black by 1885! The town quickly emerged as a major center for trade on the riverbank, including shipping supplies heading downriver for farmers along the Mississippi River; as well as manufacturing businesses such as mills run by blacksmiths or wagonmakers employed by local farmers durin

The population of Sioux City increased rapidly due to the gold rush and post-Civil War boom. By 1880, the population had reached 100,000. The city's growth accelerated during World War II as munitions plants were built in the area. After the war, Sioux City experienced a decline in its fortunes and reached its low point in the late 1960s. However, since 2000 it has regained some of its former glory as a center for economic development and cultural attractions.
