Johnston, Iowa, is a small town located in Johnson County, Iowa. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Sioux City–Council Bluffs, IA-MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Johnston has a history dating back to 1854 when it was called Clearwater and post office was opened on May 10th of that year. The name change came about because of the many Indian attacks on settlers during that time. In 1955 the community had its first school and in 1966 the first church. The current mayor is Donna Sievers who was elected in November of 2014. Johnston began as an agricultural village with some 200 households according to one source from 1916 until 1919 when it became a railroad town with 2 railroads intersecting there: the Union Pacific Railroad and Rock Island Railroad both coming through Johnston for access to other parts of Iowa Territory. This gave Johnston bragging rights as being "the crossroads of the Midwest." The First National Bank building still stands today on Main Street in Johnston and is used as a library/community center combination heating/cooling station, restaurant and gift shop. The bank also served as a meeting place for local farmers' markets which were held here until about 1978 when they were moved to Council Bluffs across town (and now are held at another location). There are several schools located around town including two high schools (Iowa Western High School & Northern Iowa University), four middle schools (Anderson Middle School, Easton Intermediate School, Guthrie Middle School & West Des Moines Intermediate School), three elementary schools (Bellefontaine Elementary, Cumberland Elementary & Hagerstown Elementary) along with one private school (Norman Township Academy). A number of businesses have been built since then such as P&G tire store(s) openSince 2006; KFC(s); Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company; Dairy Queen; Walmart; Methodist Churchmouse Galore! Johnston's economy depends heavily upon agriculture but also includes services such as health care and government services like education which are provided by Centerville Municipal Utilities District #1 which provides water, electric rates, trash collection and more to residents within walking distance of their homes or business properties without having to go out into town or suburbs.
