In 1846, when Iowa became a state, City of Rocks was renamed Des Moines because its founders wanted to maintain close ties with Montreal – then Canadia – while they developed their town into an important transportation hub on the Missouri River network linking Kansas and Illinois with Minnesota and Missouri. Other early names for what is now downtown IA City include: Prospect Heights (1849), Rock Hill (1851), Indianola (1854), West Liberty (1857), Hawkeye City (1858), Capitol Hill (1860), Wellesley Heights (1902) and Cedar Rapids
