As an agricultural center since before European settlement there was little industry developed until after World War II when Ames uranium enrichment operations began operation at nearby Rockwell International company site beginning production of nuclear weapons material for America's allies including Canada and Japan The area around Cedar Rapids formed one half of what is now known as downtown Des Moines which started developing during Reconstruction following Civil War years as businesses relocated from Nauvoo/Kansas City region to make way for new housing developments and other businesses that sprang up around this growing community. In 1945 Union Manufacturing Company Ltd., located at 8th & Dodge Streets built world's first Dole Whip container factory which continued manufacturing production through 1958 outside original building prior demolition/reconstruction

Norris' patronage network helped makeIowa City one of America's centerpieces during its early years as a territory – he appointed various officials and helped develop important civic amenities such as libraries and schools that still function today including UIUC's Mills College campus adjacent to downtown Norris also played an instrumental role in creating central government for newly acquired Des Moines County which would eventually become all but independent from Iowa City through mergers and acquisitions over time In 1840–1841 Union Pacific Railroad engineers laid track from Omaha to Council Bluffs crossing the river at what is now First Avenue southbound while northbound they built tracks parallel to US Highway 20 concurrent with Van Buren Street between State Capitol Building eastward to Jersey Street crossings just west of North Bridge Road near present day Old National Bank building In December 1840 US Postmaster General Amos Kendall directed UP Railroads president Lorenzo Stevens not only to lay track next door but also build pontoon bridges across Cedar River so mail could be carried directly between Omaha and Sioux City instead of travelling via Rock Island Arsenal
