In 1907 UIUC awarded an honorary degree (Doctorate) to Professor George Washingburn who served as Director of Research at Columbian College before becoming Regent professor at UC Berkeley where he developed a theory about gravitation which would lead to some important advances in physics during World War II. During his time at UC Berkeley Professor Washburn also founded one of America's first womens' colleges – Wellesley College – as well as numerous research institutes such as UCI Laboratory for Plasma Physics (now part of University Of California Irvine). In 1948 Drs washburn & co became Regents again for USFBC but their name was changed back then too because they were not happy with having 2 separate letters after their name so they chose just “Washburn” once again! Finally Undergraduate Dean Randolph Smith assumed this role effective FEBRUARY 1st 1969! After more than 50 years continuous leadership we move into our current facilities on SEPTEMBER 30th 1978!
