There was a gunsmith named John Brown who manufactured pistols and shotguns from 1812-1815. In 1838, James Witherspoon imported a rifle from France that he christened the “Old French Pistol”. This weapon had an 8 shot magazine and could fire shots as fast as 25 feet per second. It was used by members of the United States Congress to fight against Native American warriors. In 1846, Captain John Aiken purchased a shotgun from Nicholas Flournoy of Philadelphia, PA. The shotgun was designed by Captain Aiken himself and featured a revolving barrel that could fire 12 rounds per minute. The shotgun became known as the “Captain Aiken Shotgun” due to its distinctive design. Captain Aiken later donated this shotgun to the Iowa City Public Library in 1916 for display purposes. In 1872, Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest bought a handgun from Nicholas Flournoy for use by his Confederate forces during the Civil War.
