As part of its ongoing growth during this time period, Iowa City annexed neighboring Carbon Hill in 1901; adding another large neighborhood to its mix that continues today as North Center district on North Market Street near I-80/I-90 motorways exit 5A/5B southbound onto Walnut Street (just east of Capitol Avenue), across from First National Bank Arena where basketball games are currently played annually on Christmas day at 7 p.m., opposite Wells Fargo Tower on State Street (formerly First National Bank building) which houses nearly every major bank or financial institution located Downtown until recently including TD Ameritrade where events are currently taking place nightly adjacent to Wrigley Field). In 1907–1908 voters established an area south along Ames Road called South Town Lake after South Dakota Territory passed legislation authorizing land grants unto American citizens living within Indian Territory who were unable or unwilling to sell their holdings back to their Sioux Nation tribal consortium due largely to lack thereof available for white settlers despite efforts by Mayor James Whelan spearheaded by President Theodore Roosevelt himself! This act also designated present-day Drake University Campus northward along Ames Road from those newly allocated acres much like fellow UIA neighbors Cedar Rapids & Dubuque Streets were soon thereafter designated Seventh Ward boundaries “to provide[ing] contiguous blocks [of] properties suitable for industrial development” according to then Mayor Harry Emerson Smith’s plan years later! These developments accelerated significantly along North Municipal Drive soon afterwards becoming known simply as NMD mall area with numerous high-end stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy’s Department Store & Bloomingdale’s Clothing Store among others soon opening up throughout what would become known more commonly through various names Nevertheless often referred affectionately herein even today given its tumultuous history prior thereto over ensuing decades most notably following World War II when intense redevelopment occurred adjacent directly west off Interstate 90/I- 80 mainline dubbed Clybourne Park District which remains roughly bisected east–west today Strictly speaking this article does not constitute an exhaustive overview about downtown IA cityscape butRather more like an overview about noteworthy businesses headquartered there historical significance primarily since 2000 onward although some have since moved away
