By 1910, there were more than 1,500 businesses operating in downtown Cedar Rapids alone! Today, much of downtown remains vibrant with retail shops and restaurants dotting every storefront corner; while mainstreet retains its historical Commercial District feel complete with live music performances at various venues all yearround! During World War II (1939-1945), vast amounts of munitions created large quantities of dust which blanketed parts of northeast Iowa City until it finally dissipated some time after Victory Over Japan Day on May 8th 1945 thanks largely to German efforts to conceal their production facilities from Allied air reconnaissance crews overlord Admiral Halsey's Operation Neptune's Spear landing at Mare Island Naval Yard -codenamed "Desert Storm".
