In 1849, when it became clear that Iowa City would be its permanent home, a committee was set up to choose a new site for the town; this committee recommended choosing what is now downtown Iowa City due to its strategic location on High Street between First and Second Streets (the current Central Avenue). The first buildings in Iowa City were built around Town Hall Square—a large grassy area near present-day North Main Street and State Street—and included stores, businesses, churches and homes owned by early citizens including Landon Sink, John Auldridge, James Kearney and others. The square grew until it occupied most of downtown during its early years before being replaced by University Park in 1875 when Des Moines opened its doors to students from rural areas east of the Mississippi River. In 1907 Union Pacific Railroad donated land along High Street between First and Second Streets for what would become Lincoln Park; this area includes part of today's South Side Market district where Iowans shopping since 1927 can find unique items from all corners of the world inside one central space daily. Developing further south along High were two other important squares: Vinegar Hill (now West Third Street) which housed several breweries until prohibition made them illegal to sell alcohol in 1920; northwest corner ofpresent-day Wabash Avenue/Buckner Road (northwest corner then southwest corner now intersection of Northwest Highway/Wabash Avenue) served as home to several banks & insurance companies until they moved out or been taken over by other entities following WORLD WAR II while also hosting various military barracks; during desegregation efforts prior to Brown v Boardinghouse case Interstate bus service bringing African Americans into downtown IACity stopped running near Pershing Square just east of today’s Courts Plaza past Niles Center on Washington Boulevard) serving primarily black residents uptown from Midtown through Drake University until buses ran directly east off I-235 past Grandview Heights onto Prairie View A&M Drive serving mostly white residents east end until 1955 when express buses starting running parallel US 21 west off I-235 served mostly white residents east end terminating at White Sands Missile Range). On December 3rd 1890 Mayor Jensen set up streetcars throughout town within blocks limits making travel easy & faster than walking or riding horses which had been common previously
