Indianola is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1871 by William Fenton and his wife Sarah. Indianola is located on the Mississippi River at its confluence with the Missouri River. The first permanent settler in Indianola was Hugh McKinney who arrived in 1868. He built a log cabin on the bluff above the river. In 1870, he married Mary Davis and they moved to what is now downtown Indianola. By 1872, there were five families living in Indianola: McKinney, Davis, Pickett, White and Hays. In 1875 John Wolkamp arrived from Holland Township near Sioux City and started homesteading east of town on what is now the south side of US Highway 611 (now US Highway 26). Wolkamp's heirs continued to farm around Indianola until 1944 when all but one farm became part of the city of Des Moines after it was annexed by that city. In 1905 James Aiken set out from Council Bluffs with two horses to found Aiken & Company Zion Mail Railway which ran from Council Bluffs downriver to I-235 just north of present day downtown Des Moines (then called "Iowa City"). The company merged into Chicago Postmaster General Telegraph Company in 1907 and ceased operations two years later due to financial problems; however, some remnants remain today as Aiken's Trail Loop Drive (I-235) between Sioux City and Des Moines. One major event that took place during this time period was World War I which erupted across Europe throughout late October/early November 1914 when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria assassinated Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I along with his wife Sophie Amalia at Sarajevo Castle because they did not agree with his marriage plans to Marie Therese von Hohenberg an Austrian princess; this event led to World War I which began three weeks later on October 28th when Austria declared war on Serbia following Serbian protests over Franz Ferdinand's marriage plans! As war raged across Europe various groups formed including The American Legion Auxiliary No 194 who had been organized by Republican Party member Charles Evans Hughes in 1916; their purpose was “to provide moral support for Central America” as well as raise money for American troops fighting overseas while also protesting German rule throughout Europe; another group called The Protective League composed mostly of farmers who subscribed to theories that Germany posed a threat not only nationally but internationally due to its aggressive militarism towards other countries; yet another organization known as Knights Templar Volunteers Corps which consisted primarily of young men aged 17 or younger interested in helping their community service through providing leadership development opportunities within local churches etc.; these organizations were all either spontaneously created or were Response To International Events Which Occurred Which Influenced Their Formation
