Indianola is a town in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Indianola were French traders in 1683. The area that now includes Indianola was part of present-day Muscatine County when it was organized as a county on December 3, 1854. The first white settler in what is now Indianola was James A. Doane and his family who arrived in 1855 from Illinois. In 1857, John Crouch arrived from Massachusetts settling near what is now West Union High School; he erected the first store there and named it after himself, "Crouch's store". In 1865, J.W. Potter opened a feed store by the river at what is now Old Depot Square and named it "Potter's Ferry". In 1867, George Hickey established a flour mill on the south side of the river opposite old Potter's Ferry and called it "Hickey's Mill". By 1870 most of what is today Indianola had been settled with about 120 families living in 31 houses scattered around six square miles (15 km²). In 1875 local farmers Isaac Nourse and Thaddeus Kosciusko united with other farmers to form the Iowa Grain Elevator Company Limited which bought land for grain Elevators near Amesbury (now Ames) along the Delaware River between Cedar Rapids and Waterloo; this company became known as Northern Pacific Railway Company Limited or NPLC for short before being acquired by UP in 1901. CNL built an elevator at Sioux City (later Sioux Falls) on August 15, 1902 which caused a stir because until then farm goods had usually been transported overland via wagons drawn by teams of oxen or horses acrossIowa plains to Chicago where they were embarked on trainloads of barges destined for large markets such as New York City or Liverpool England before arriving at Imlay Harbor near Superior on Lake Superior where they were offloaded onto riversideboats bound for Duluth or Minneapolis—St Paul; however during World War I this process was abandoned due to wartime shortages of shipping containers so goods could only be shipped through Duluth . By 1918 NPLC had constructed 4 warehouses with storage capacity for 2 million bushels (48 metric tons) per day but these facilities never equalled those used today as Northern Pacific Railway closed down its main line from Sioux City to Omaha in 1970 leaving INDIANOLA without any railway service whatsoever! It wasn't until 1945 when American soldiers liberated Czechoslovakia that Northern Pacific Railway began operations once again transporting goods north from Omaha to St Louis MO using their former lines west of Cedar Rapids; this resulted in increased traffic on State Highway 10which became known locally as "NPRC Road" since all access roads leading into town were formerly CNL lines! On May 12th 1961 residents voted overwhelmingly not to annex adjacent Clearwater Township so that would have allowed businesses within town limits such as KFC/McDonalds/PepsiCola etc., while still allowing existing residents living within annexed boundaries full voting rights including representation on city councils! This issue would continue up until 1983 when annexation proceedings finally ended following lawsuits brought against city council members by business owners who claimed they didn't get fair treatment during annexation deliberations! In February 1984 Mayor Don Walsh announced plans to build a new high school which would serve both Village Creek Elementary School located across from US 26 between US 509 & US 622 eastbound & village creek middle school located just west of FM 571 northwestbound making both schools completely integrated into one building! This project ultimately failed but has served as an inspiration for many other towns throughout Iowa trying similar projects! Finally construction started on district headquarters located off Main Street east of I-235 just south of Village Creek Parkway later renamed Town Hall Plaza after funding ran out causing much public outcry! After years of community input and fundraising effort neighboring communities Woodbury & Pleasant Prairie formally annexed Indianola effective November 25th 1997 becoming part of the newly formed Muscatine County government! TodayIndianola remains an agricultural center with cereal crops such as corn, soybeans and wheat produced primarily along its wide banks settings sunnier climates year round producing fruit trees like apples etc., hayseed production including cattle feedlots providing necessary nutrients essential for ruminants like llamas & alpacas while also supporting poultry producerns with eggs & meat products; dogwood horticulture utilizing tree branches used for artificial lighting inside homes resulting in often beautiful flowers available year round

Indianola was founded in 1847 by Joshua Freeman and his wife Catharine. The town was named for the Sac and Fox Indians who had been living there before. Freeman owned a vast amount of land around the town, making it one of the most prosperous communities in Iowa at the time. Indianola became an important transportation center due to its location on the main road between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. The community also became known for its large flour mill, which helped make Indianola one of the most bountiful wheat-growing areas in Iowa.
