Indianola is a town in UIowan County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1836 by Danish immigrants who named their new community Indianola after the gristmill on the Koshkonkonk River. The first post office in Indianola was established in 1836; it served as the only post office in Indianola for two years. The first store opened in 1837 and continued to operate until 1840. A flour mill was built near the town in 1840 and operated until 1865. The first school was organized in 1841 and operated until1847. A second school organized in1851 served Indianola through 1860; it closed when enrollment increased to too many students for one building. In 1881, local farmers began growing corn on their own farms which led to a new industry called "cornhusker" products which were marketed throughout central Iowa from 1886-1914. Cornhuskers were made of tough dried corn kernels that were shipped fresh to market every day and stored under cover during storage so that they would not spoil prematurely. The growth of manufacturing around World War II caused local layoffs as businesses moved away from agriculture due to competition from wartime military production needs such as aircraft parts, tanks, warships and radios. However, since 1945 there has been steady job growth with a current population of over 2,000 people living within a radius of 5 miles of the downtown business district alone
The first settlers in Indianola, Iowa were the Cline family. The Clines arrived in 1836 and started a farm on what is now Railroad Street. The Clines were followed by the Mayhews and the Price family. In 1857, the Price family moved to Walnut Grove and later to their current home on North Main Street.
