Indianola is a city in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 9,859 at the 2010 census. Indianola is part of the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area. The town was founded by Nathanial Hawkinson in 1855 and named for General Joseph Fenton, who had fought against Spain in the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in 1857. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the Des Moines River and its position as a transportation center for surrounding villages. By 1870, Indianola had a population of 20 residents and was incorporated as a city. In 1902, the name of the city was changed to honor General George Armstrong Custer, who had been killed during the Mexican-American War two years earlier. In 1930, Indianola began construction on what is now known as Interstate 35W which connected it with Cedar Rapids and other cities to the north and west. At that time it was one of the largest ever projects undertaken in Iowa by local governments combined with private enterprise. The $30 million project included widening I-35W from four lanes to six while demolishing several bridges along the way and connecting Indianola with neighboring towns through expressways such as Ulysses S Grant Boulevard (now State Highway 6) and Buffalo Creek Road (now State Highway 16). It also added access to rural areas previously off limits to motor vehicles or travelers. The city continues to grow today thanks largely to its connections to nearby communities including Cedar Rapids, Amesbury Heights/Mount Pleasant Village, Watertown Heights/Hennepin Mills Township, Lock Haven Township/Lenox Hill Borough and Una Park/Olathe Township
