Indianola is a small town in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Urbandale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was platted in 1879 and named for General John C. Fremont, an American soldier who fought in the Mexican-American War and helped found Iowa City. Indianola is located on the West Side of Cedar Rapids within walking distance of most of its commercial districts. The first settler to come to Indianola was George Aiken in 1879. By 1888, there were four families living in Indianola: Haggerty, White, Crumpler and Snively. In 1893 Samuel Silliman built the first frame house in Indianola and started viticulture on his farm around this time. In 1907–08 a new school was built by Mrs. Ladds (later Mrs. Christensen) and Mr Heineman as a way to keep up with growing schools outside of Cedar Rapids. The building cost $6,000 and it served until 1975 when it burned down after being used as a storage shed during tornado season). In 1916 truckloads of potatoes were brought into town from Allamakee County for shipment to Des Moines because local farmers could not get enough acreage to grow potatoes due to droughts caused by climate change; this event led to the naming of one street after this occasion - "Potato Street". In 1936 Iowan Brewing Company was established in what is now downtown Indianola by Milton Hickey as a way for people to get their hands on some beer that wasn't available from other distributors due to Prohibition efforts back then (the company still exists today). One year later another brewery called Waterloo opened up next door selling craft beers made with barley instead of corn malt which became popular among area residents before eventually closing down too (it's still standing though - check out their website!). In 1951 Iowan Foods Corporation organized growers markets all over central Iowa under one roof starting out with just three locations but soon expanding into fifteen markets across five states by 1959!
