Indianola was founded in 1854 by a group of men who were looking for a new place to live. The town was named after the Indianola River, which flows through the town. The first store in Indianola opened in 1857. In 1860, the first school was built. In 1865, Indianola became a city. In 1920, the city merger with Davenport made Indianola an even larger city with over 100,000 people. The population peaked at 150,000 in 1950 and declined to 90,000 by 1970. Today, Indianola has a population of around 50 residents and it is one of Iowa's smallest cities. The history of Indianola began with the founding of the town by some men looking for a place to live on the banks of the river. The town was founded on December 6th, 1854 by John Wray and James Aiken as part of a settlement known as Dakota City. At that time there were only about 10 people living in this small community along the edge of what is now Sioux City County and Davenport County. It wasn’t until 1862 when land was sold within walking distance of Dakota City to create what would become Indianola. This purchase included 4 acres (1 hectare) north-northwest of present day Main Street and south-southwest of present day Second Street between Pine Creek Road and High School Road.. The early settlers were mainly farmers with some timber operations also conducted at this time. By 1870 there were over 120 residents living in Indianola according to census data from that year.. After years Of growth and development within our small community we have come up with many famous landmarks including: Pioneer Hall where Classes meet every 2nd Wednesday For Home Economics & Science; Mrs Banks gone but not forgotten her Ladies Bakery once located on Main St just east side main drag; Blockbuster Video Games available 24/7 across all blocks starting at 8am ‘til late! Our Police Department currently consists Chief Deputy Sheriff Jeff Hultgren an experienced officer sworn since 1978; Robert Benson Memorial Library open 7 days per week during school hours serving grades Pre K thru 8th grade plus adult reader services evenings & weekends long term; Mrs Barnes favorite restaurant which closed last year due to fire but reopened under new management earlier this year continued serving breakfast today 9:00am-11pm daily & lunch 11am-3pm daily! Finally we want to say Thank You To Our Mayor Nancy Ladd for all her help getting us off the ground over these many years she has been amazing!
