Indianola is a small town in Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1854 by the Benton and Hancock families. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. Indianola is the only town in Iowa with a football team. The town also has a high school, two colleges, and one professional sports team, the Iowa Hawkeyes of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The name "Indianola" comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "place of many fish." The first settler in Indianola was James Hawkins who built his house on what is now Main Street in 1854. Two years later, John Purdy arrived and started to farm land around what is now Northwestern Avenue and High Street. In 1860, Isaac Hendricks bought some land from Purdy and began to build a cabin on what is now Park Avenue. In 1865, George Davenport moved to Indianola from Keokuk County, Minnesota with his family and began buying land around what is now Northwest Boulevard and Park Avenue. He named his new settlement "Davenportville." By 1870, there were over 20 people living in Davenportville. In 1872, Andrew Jenson purchased some land east of present-day Indianola from Alexander Graham Bell for $1 million dollars. Jenson named his new community "Jensonville". A few years later, John Wickersham donated money to build a school near present-day Eastern Drive and North Broadway Streets which became known as Wickersham College. In 1875-76 local farmer James Hanks laid out much of today's central business district including the current site of Indianola when he purchased 640 acres (2 km2) of farmland north of town for $27 per acre ($752 per kilometer). This area would become known as Hanks Center after him. In 1857, a school was built and classes began. The town grew rapidly and by 1860 it had a population of around 100 people. By 1865, Indianola had a cotton gin, grist mill, store, blacksmith shop and three churches. In 1870-71, the railroad came through the community and it quickly grew into a small township with a population of around 350 people. In 1907-08, Indianola became part of the Great Lakes State University system which included both Iowa State University and Northern Illinois University. In 1916-17, Indianola became home to the National Guard Armory which served as an armory for many years until it was replaced by the current building in 1993. As part of its affiliation with state universities, Great Lakes State University also conferred bachelor's degrees on behalf of Iowa State University students in 1942-43 and 1984-85. In 1951-52, Indianola became home to the Republican National Convention which met at Drake Stadium across from town hall. That year also saw the first football game between IowA State College (now UI) and Des Moines Men’s Club (now Drake). In 1957-58, IowA State College moved from Lycoming to become one of only two NCAA Division III schools in Iowa; Iowan athletes then started attending great American universities such as Northwestern (IL), UCLA (CA), etc., rather thanIowaStateUniversity/Northern IllinoisUniversity where they would have been ineligible for NCAA competition due to their lower division status (). From 1961 until 1983 when ISU joined forces with Northern Illinois University to form “Great Lakes Universities” program each university bestowed their own degree type on its Ames campus' student body: ISU conferred undergraduate degrees while NIU bestowed graduate degrees (); however this arrangement ended upon NIU's merger with DePaul Univisionsue Press School Of Journalism & Mass Communication in 1987 ().
