The history of Indianola, Iowa can be traced back to 1854 when the town was founded by Isaac Miles and his wife, Eliza. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1865, the town became a station on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. Indianola continued to grow and by 1907 had a population of 2,500 people. By 1920, the town had reached its current size with 3,000 residents.

The school district that Indianola serves is called Cedar Rapids-Hennepin School District. The land that now Indianola was first settled by people from Ohio in 1836. They named their new settlement for General George Armstrong Custer and his black regiment which had fought against the US during the Mexican War. In 1839, the town plat was filed and Indianola became a station on the Burlington and Quincy Railroad. In 1842, James Kapp founded a post office in Indianola and it continued to serve until 1951. The first store in town opened in 1845 and soon other businesses followed including a millinery shop, grocery store and hotel/motel built around 1850s which still stands today as an independent property rental business known as The Oaks Inn & Suites (formerly known as Park Plaza Hotel). In 1860, John Shively arrived from Europe with his family to start farming in what is now Indianola after leaving his farm near Marlowe Center, Vermont where he had been employed as an agent for Hennepin Coal Company . He started out with just one man’s tools but soon began hiring others to help him with planting, harvesting and processing coal into bricks or saw blades or other products used by settlers all over America. By 1865 Shively had developed a large acreage of cornfield housing about 100 families who raised pigs, cows and chickens; also grown were some crops such as beans (later changed to corn), wheat and potatoes; several small frame buildings were erected hereabouts before 1840s when most residents lived off their land rather than buy goods they could not use right away due to lack of transportation or marketability of products at that time
