By 2000, Indiaola had reached its current size with over 60 businesses including 15 banks, 12 shopping centers, 5 professional services firms, 3 medical clinics/ practices, 2 theaters/multipurpose venues, 1 golf course/, and 1 soccer team/. In recent years, Indiaolan has been gaining attention for its unique architecture which features Stick-style homes with characteristic red gables and green shutters dating back to the early 1800s. Despite having some challenges such as low job growth rates and relatively low per capita income compared to other Iowa communities (the median household income is $50,000), Indianola has seen considerable progress over the past few decades thanks to its strong economic development program which includes several initiatives such as: a downtown revitalization project; a community college; an infrastructure project; a family daycare center; and a new library addition/renovation).

Indianola was founded in 1847 by a group of farmers led by Captain James K. Polk. The town was named for the prominent Sioux chief, Hennepin County Seat from the time until it was renamed in honor of General George Custer in 1907. The town's early economy relied on agriculture and cattle herding, but as Indianola grew, so did its commerce and industry. In 1872, the first railroad to reach Indianola was constructed, and soon after, a school and post office were built. By 1890, Indianola had become a thriving community with businesses such as shoe stores and general stores; several churches; a hospital; and two hotels. However, during World War I (1914-18), Indianola became an important military center due to its location at the mouth of the Cedar River which served as the main supply route for the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). After the war ended, many of Indianola's businesses closed down or experienced other difficulties that limited their ability to continue operating. In 1957-1960, Iowa Governor John Sprague unveiled plans to relocate all of Iowa's agricultural production to new facilities outside of Des Moines because of concerns over dwindling water supplies due to climate change. As a result of this plan, much attention was given to Indianola - both positive and negative - as it potential impact on local economies throughout Iowa. Ultimately, these plans never came into fruition and no physical relocation occurred; rather,Iowa Agriculture Extension Service continued support for traditional growing practices within state borders until recently when that support too expired
