Indianola is a town in Iowa, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Indianola was established on December 22, 1868, by J.T. English and Wm. Fenton. The current post office building was built in 1903 and is located on Main Street near the intersection of Elm and South streets. The town name came from an early settler named John Indianola who had been attracted to the area because it was well-watered and had excellent soil for farming purposes. As early as 1870, there were reports of people living near what is now known as Indianola Lake because it would provide irrigation water for farmers in the surrounding area. In 1872, one of the founders of Cedar Rapids submitted a petition to become a town center with land that would include what is now Indianola Township including all of modern day Cedar Rapids County; however, this request was not accepted until after his death in 1888). In 1895, when Cedar Rapids annexed much of Iowa City (then called “the city proper”) including parts of downtown that are today known as State Capitol Park and First National Bank Park east of State Capitol Avenue; Indianola became an integral part of that annexation process since its boundaries overlapped those of Cedar Rapids University (now Iowa State University) to the south and northwest and Amesbury Township to the north approximately 4 miles wide (6 km). On July 1, 1847, the first white settlement in Indianola was established. The community was named after General David Dixon and his brigade of cavalry who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly and by 1881 there were over 100 residents. Indianola became a stop on the Burlington, Iowa branch of the Great Western Railway in 1892. In 1906 it was incorporated as a city.
