When California became an American state in 1850, there were concerns that Mexico would try to take control of California via land route from Texas or through Mexico City to San Francisco Bay Area so American citizens needed protection from Mexican forces attacking them along those routes not only against Indians but also Mexican bandits and raiders dispatched by Governor Felix Joaquin Mora y Valdez intent on stealing goods or kidnapping people en route across their territory into America that might be used for trade with Santa Fe (New Mexico). The United States Congress responded by authorizing President Franklin D. The fort served as a military post for the Iowa Territory from 1821 to1838 and played an important role in the development of Iowa culture. In 1846, Brigadier General Jonathan C. Parker destroyed part of the fort during an attempt to capture Iowa City; this event is often called the Battle of Fort Madison.
