Fort Madison was founded in 1836 as a trading post on the Iowa River. By 1840, it had been renamed Fort Madison and was garrisoned by United States troops under the command of Major General James K. Polk. In 1851, Fort Madison became the capital of Iowa Territory and in 1865 it became the capital of Iowa Statehood. This campaign marked the beginning of an overall series of engagements known collectively as the Civil War in Iowa Territory (see timeline below). The defenses that were constructed at Fort Dodge during World War I included an abatis system composed of trees 100 feet high that could be pulled down with artillery fire if required; these defenses were removed in 1935 when Highway 1 was built across Indian Territory east ofFort Dodge proper
