In 1879, a man named George Armstrong put together a team of men to start the first shooting gallery in Fort Madison. The first game was held on July 4th and it was a success. The next year, the team decided to hold their games outdoors instead of inside because they believed that people would be more interested in playing outside if they could see other people doing it. They also decided to add an extra game for fun. In 1881, the team went on to win their second game and set an attendance record for the town of Fort Madison. The popularity of the Shooting Gallery prompted other businesses to establish themselves in Fort Madison as well. By 1887, there were twelve businesses in Fort Madison and over one hundred people were employed at them. During this time, many different types of firearms were being used; from shotguns to revolvers. Eventually, the Shooting Gallery closed down due to financial problems but it left an indelible mark onFort Madison history.

On October 16th 1942, German soldiers attacked American military forces stationed at the bridgehead with tanks and artillery while supplies were being unloaded into American vehicles transporting troops across the river. The attack resulted in heavy casualties for both sides; however, FortMadison's defenders managed to save most of their equipment and munitions before retreating back acrossthebridgeheadonOctober17th 1942. In 1949,FortMadisonwas designated as Iowa's capital city by then-Governor Tom Vilsack following approval by the state legislature. In response to growing downtown business interests and traffic congestion around Statehouse Square, Mayor Dave Beavers proposed that FortMadison be developed into an entertainment district anchored by two hotels: one serving as both a convention center and stadium for football games and another becoming home to multiple nightclubs and restaurants as well as residential buildings housing small businesses/civic organizations called "Eagle Rock". This proposal failed to gain approval from either Chamberof Commerce or City Council members due primarilyto opposition from powerful real estate interests involved with downtown development projects adjacent to Statehouse Square which opposed any change whatsoever outside of their strictly commercial interests
