Fort Madison was founded in 1847 as a military post on the edge of the Iowa Territory. It became an important center for rifle and artillery training during the American Civil War, and then became an important base for Native American warfighting. The fort was surrendered by the Sioux in 1865, but it continued to be used as a military facility until its closure in 1993. Today, Fort Madison is home to the Iowa State University campus and is also known for its traditional Native American warfare demonstrations.

Fort Madison, Iowa is a city in Fort Madison County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1852 by Captain James K. Polk and his wife Julia Bidwell Polk. It became a county seat in 1857. The first settler in Fort Madison was John Aiken who arrived from Connecticut on April 12, 1851. Aiken's son-in-law Daniel Webster built a cabin on the west side of the river near present day First National Bank building in 1853. In 1850 Captain James K Polk purchased 2 acres (0.8 ha) north of the fort for $300 cash and named it "Fort Madison." He also donated land to build what would become the first schoolhouse and post office within its boundaries - these were erected on July 4, 1852 with money contributed by himself and others including banker George Stephenson Fenton who had donated land for the new village. In 1861 Captain Polk died and his widow Julia took over command of the fort as its commander until her husband's death two years later on November 3rd at age 72 years old after serving with distinction during the American Civil War as captain of Company D 1st Iowa Infantry Regiment (11th Iowa Cavalry). Mrs. Polk continued to serve at Fort Madison until her death on October 10th 1865 aged 85 years old; she is buried there alongside her husband and many other early settlers including their children John Quincy Adams Polk Jr., Sarah Addison Hull, Richard Harding Wright III After Mrs. Polk's death an election committee appointed by Mayor David Burt selected Hemanus Ladd as acting mayor pending appointment of an permanent mayor due to political subdivision changes which occurred following Reconstruction Period ending May 4th 1870 when all former Confederate States Of America had become Union states under The General Government Of America Act & Kansas Territory had been admitted into that state & therefore Hemanus Ladd became acting mayor until vacant position was filled by Samuel Wigginpah; however before long this situation changed as Samuel Wigginpah resigned effective May 14th 1870 because he married Anna Beecher Stowe (&#Array(1)) days prior & Anna Beecher Stowe served as Minneapolis City Councilwoman from Ward 7 starting December 1st 1870 thru January 6th 1871 while Hemanus Ladd continued to serve as acting mayor pending appointment of an permanent mayor

The city began to grow even more due to its role as a military outpost and its ability to supply troops on the border with Nebraska. In 1870, Fort Madison became part of the Dakota Territory after they were granted their own statehood. The city declined during this time as it lost access to education, jobs and infrastructure. However, it recovered slightly during World War II due to its importance as an airfield for the United States Air Force and as a port for shipping goods from Omaha City
