Fort Madison, Iowa, was a Union fortification in the Des Moines Valley during the American Civil War. The fortifications were constructed to protect the town from Confederate attack. The fortifications consisted of a single battery of artillery and six infantry companies. The fortifications were manned by Union soldiers and sailors who supplemented the Fort Madison garrison with local volunteers. On June 1, 1861, Confederate forces attacked Fort Madison and burned down part of the fortification. Three days later, Confederate forces again attacked Fort Madison and burned down another part of the fortification. On June 6, 1861, Union troops arrived at FortMadison and began construction of new defenses around the town. The new defenses included two batteries of artillery and eight infantry companies. The new defenses also included a hospital complex which was used to care for wounded Union soldiers as well as civilian refugees influxing into Fort Madison during the war. The Union defenders of FortMadison lasted until late November 1861 when they were forced to surrender due to lack of supplies and terrain changes in favor of Confederate forces heading southward towards Des Moines City Limits.

In 1847, Major General David Dixon decided to build a newFort Buchanan on the east bank of the Missouri River opposite his old fort at Fort Riley. The new fort was designed by Daniel Burnham and construction began in November that year. It took three years to complete and opened on October 24, 1850. At its peak, Fort Buchanan had 40 soldiers garrisoned there along with 11 cannons and 2 artillery pieces. After Ft Buchanan's completion, Major General Dixon determined that he would no longer need a military base at FortMadison so he relocated all his troops back to FtRiley in February1851 effective July 1st that year which put an end to Indian attacks against southern Illinoisans living near FtRiley during this time period
Fort Madison was established in 1846 as the first permanent military installation in Iowa. In 1868, Fort Madison was renamed Fort Dodge after General George H. Dodge, commander of Indian Affairs during Reconstruction.
