The first settlers to come to present-day Fort Madison were men from what is now central Wisconsin who trekked overland from Minnesota in search of land where they could grow crops and build houses. They came upriver through what is now Waterloo County,Iowa, and camped on the banks of the Arkansas River near modern-day Burlington before traveling eastward towards modern-day Dubuque. On September 12,1837, a party led by Captain John Fenton journeyed downriver from Council Bluffs along the Missouri River and established a temporary camp at what is now known as Fenton's Landing on the Snake River above present-day Mount Pleasant. On October 7,1837, another group led by Captain George Armstrong arrived downstream from Fenton's Landing with goods and supplies for possible settlement within Plattsburg County (now Clearwater County). After spending two days exploring the area around Watertown Rapids they decided against developing any further settlements and turned back upstream towards Council Bluffs with their new found possessions. In November 1837 Captains Polk (left) & Armstrong (right) reassembled their original forces at Fort Dodge under Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Wainwright after arriving from Council Bluffs via steamboat from St Louis With General Henry Clay’s terms being met & Kansas admitted into Union on February 14th 1838 Ft Dodge became 4th Military District headquarters under command of Major General David Hunter
