In 1899–1900 a group of citizens started restoration work on the fort which continued until 1907 when all remaining structures were razed following orders from General Nelson Agedge Grant who had taken control of Des Moines area following his victory at Buena Vista Hill Battle that year over Mexican forces under Jose Antonio Mexia at Santa Clara Mesa Creek Bridge north of town (now part of downtown Des Moines). This event marks one point in history where Ulysses S Grant played leadership role within American military forces east of Mexico City (the so-called “Great Western War”).
