Fort Madison was established in 1846 as a military post on the Iowa River near present-day Council Bluffs, Iowa. The fort served as an important garrison and transportation center for the region during the early years of the American Civil War. In 1840, due to its strategic location overlooking Cedar Rapids, Fort Madison became home to Polk County’s first courthouse when Judge James Hickey moved from Vandalia to build it on land donated by Captain John Pritchard. The building still stands today and is open to visitors daily during daylight hours. In 1846, following Iowa’s admission into the United States, Fort Madison becamethe county seat of Polk County which remained an important center of government until Des Moines took over in 1907. During World War II, many troops stationed at Fort Madison fought on both sides of the conflict including members of Patton’s Third Army who occupied what is now downtown Wichita Falls before crossing into Texas for their final battle against Japan near San Antonio prior to surrendering on September 2nd 1945. After hostilities ended, many soldiers returned home or continued their service elsewhere within our nation; however some stayed behind and formed what is now known as “The Cowboy Cavalry” who helped rebuild infrastructure after the war such as jobs at DuPont chemical plants across eastern Iowa beginning in 1948-49 *.FortMadison has seen multiple incarnations throughout its history including a post office (1896), Farmer’s Market (1901), Chamber Of Commerce (1910), Little America Museum (1986),Polk County Courthouse Annex (1991-2002)*,John Hickey House*(2007-2008)*and finally its current incarnation which began operations August 1st 2008 as part of renovations undertaken pursuant to landmark designation bestowed upon it by Iowa State Highway Patrol *
