Fort Madison was founded in 1795 byCaptain James K. Polk, who named it for his ancestor Fort William Henry at Vincennes, Indiana. The fortification was built to protect the growing town of Fort Madison from Indian attack and to provide a military presence in the area. The fortifications were first used to defend against French and British attacks. In 1812, the fortification was expanded to include a cavalry barracks, artillery battery, and a supply depot. In 1818, the fortification was renamed Fort Washington after General George Boolston's victory over the Creek Nation in Alabama. From 1824 until 1840, the fortifications served as storage buildings for ammunition and supplies for the army stationed at Iowa City. In 1840, President James K. Polk ordered that allforts be destroyed because they were no longer necessary in light of new technology such as cannonsballistics that could destroy enemy positions without attacking directly. The remaining structures were decommissioned on May 16th of 1870 and lay abandoned until 1978 when they were reactivated as part of the Iowa History Museum project known as "The American Revolution." Today, Fort Madison is one of only two original U.S. forts left standing in Iowa (the other being Independence Hall). The fortification is open to visitors during regular museum hours; however, there are no public tours available during off-hours or on weekends due to security concerns related to vandalism/hacker threats against historical sites across America. Fort Madison has been cited as one of "America's Most Historic Places" by both National Geographic magazine and history buffs around the world including TIME Magazine who called it "one of America’s most important historic sites." The fortifications are also included on several national tourist trails including “Rural Road Trip USA” which travels through Iowa County and visits various stops along its route including Fort Madison; Mount Rushmore National Monument; Independence Hall;and Des Moines Zoo

The fort was moved to its current location in 1858, and became a seat of government for the Iowa Territory. In 1862, Fort Dodge was established on the shore of the Des Moines River opposite Fort Madison, and it served as Iowa's capital from 1862 to 1867. The fort was redesignated as Fort Randolph in 1865, and it served as Iowa's capital until Des Moines metropolitan area became an official city in 1968.
