This increased NativeAmerican activity led General Nathan Bedford Forrest who commanded American forces occupying Iowa City during World War I to decide that artillery would be more effective against hostile Sioux tribes instead of relying solely on rifle fire
Fort Madison was a fortification on the Mississippi River in Iowa. It was built by Colonel George Post in 1812, and saw service during the Mexican-American War. The fortifications were destroyed in 1847, but were rebuilt and named Fort Madison National Monument in 1905.
