Today,Fort Madison is home to several museums including the Iowa History Museum and State Historical Society of Iowa’s Black Hawk County Museum which displays artifacts from throughout Iowa’s history including items from Fort Madison
The first permanent settler in the area was Jesse W. Judd, who arrived in 1836. He erected a log cabin on the present site of Fort Madison in 1837. In 1840, John Tilton came to the area and established a flour mill on the south side of current-day Iowa State University campus. The town of Fort Madison began to grow around these businesses and residents started calling themselves "Iowa Cityians." In 1846, Iowa City became the capital of Iowa when Congress passed an act creating that state. The city's growth continued as new businesses were founded and people from all over moved into the city. By 1860, Fort Madison had become an important military post for the region and its residents were known as "Iowa Cityians II." During World War I, Iowa City was hit hard by war-related destruction and loss of life. Many stores and homes were destroyed or damaged, leaving many small businesses struggling to keep up with increased demand for goods from soldiers stationed in Europe. However, by 1919, Iowa City had recovered sufficiently to resume Its normal activities as a vibrant open-air market place full of commerce and art galleries.
