The first upper receivers were made in Fort Madison, Iowa back in 1897. The rifles were built by the Soldiers of the 1st Infantry Regiment and 3rd Cavalry Brigade Combat Team and used until 1898 when a new rifle was standardized. It was called the “ Stevens Rifle” it had a wood stock with a metal barrel. From 1898-1911 there were only two models of this rifle; one with a wood stock and one with a synthetic stock. In 1911, the 2nd Infantry Regiment began using these rifles which evolved into today’s AR15 Upper Receivers. In 1947, an amendment to the U.S Constitution allowed for military service by citizens from states that did not have state militias. SoFort Madison became home to America’s firstarmy Multiservice Center (MTC) where American Forces Europe (A4E) stored its munitions including artillery, tanks and other armored vehicles while also providing training for U.S combat troops stationed overseas. After World War II, ArmaLite began manufacturing AR15 Upper Receivers in Fort Madison as well as other firearms products under license from Colt Firearms Corporation (now Rock Island Armory).
