As shooters around the world flock to various shooting ranges for target practice, some may be unaware of Fort Dodge’s long and proud history as a center for shooting. This paper will explore the origins of target holders in Fort Dodge and their current use at various local ranges. The first Target Holders were developed by Captain George Armstrong in 1879 at the fort. These holders were made from wood or metal tubing and had two posts that could be held together with chains or a belt loop. In 1907, Capt. John Aiken designed a new type of Target Holder which was made from galvanized steel plates instead of wooden tubes. The plates could be replaced by any number of circles or squares that could be aimed at different parts of the target while it remained stationary (see diagram below). This new design allowed shooters to fire multiple rounds at a single target without having to remove the holder every time one round was fired. Eventually, all Target Holders became known as “Aiken Holders” after Capt John Aiken who designed them. The next major change to Target Holder design came about in 1912 when LtCol Jesse Lord redesigned them for the US Army Air Forces (USAAF). He added an adjustable bipod which permitted shooters to fire from any angle within ±5 degrees up/down/left/right on either side of the target while it remained stationary (see diagram below). With this redesign,Target Holders began appearing on American military aircraft like B-17 bombers and P-47 fighter planes during World War II (see photos below). After World War II,Targetholders fell out of favor with many bombing pilots because they were difficult to aim at close range and required more than one hand to operate; however, these holders still remain popular among recreational shooters today ( see photo below ).

Fort Dodge was a military post located in the present-day town of Fort Dodge, Iowa. The post was established in 1851 and served as an artillery battery during the American Civil War. In 1865, Fort Dodge was surrendered by Union forces following the Battle of Fort Douglas. After the war, Fort Dodge became a arsenal and ammunition depot. It closed its doors for good in 1984. Today, Fort Dodge is occupied by the nearby community of West Des Moines. The first settlers to arrive at what is now Fort Dodge were farmers from eastern Pennsylvania who arrived in 1848. The fort served as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail until it was destroyed by a fire in 1853. In 1851, General James Kildare ordered Major Nathaniel Lyon to build a fort at this location to protect settlers travelling through central Iowa on their way to Benton County, Kansas. The fortifications were completed in January 1852 and served as an artillery battery during the American Civil War. In 1865, Union forces retreated after Battle of Ft Douglas and abandoned their positions at Fort Dodge. For many years after the war, it remained vacant due to its proximity to West Des Moines and lack of any military use. However, in 1984, Army ammunition depot No 1 closed its doors after more than 60 years of service; this left Fort Dodge with no Hope Armory or other means for defense against potential threats outside our borders
