On November 3rd 1951 Ft Dodge held its first municipal election which resulted in Mayor Wm Hanks being elected over incumbent Ed Litton by 6 votes out of 8 cast including abstentions from two wards within Ft Dodge limits making up almost half of all electors turnout which set off what would become known as "The Great Clean-up" throughout much of downtown Ft dodge

FORT DOGEON, IA - On April 15, 1853 the first wagon train of emigrants arrived in Fort Dodge. The town was founded by John Jacob Astor and his brother Samuel in what is now Iowa City. The population of Fort Dodge reached 100 people by 1860. In 1868 the First World War started and many men from Iowa City decided to enlist. The town quickly became known as "The Little Redoubt" because of the number of soldiers stationed here. In 1917 Fort Dodge was renamed Fort Dodge Army Ammunition Plant after the plant's owner, General Electric Company, donated $10,000 for the town's purchase. From 1917 until its closure in 1978, the Army Ammunition Plant housed a large manufacturing operation that produced munitions for America's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
