Fort Dodge, Iowa is a small town located in Polk County, Iowa. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Fort Dodge was founded in 1855 as a fort on the banks of the Mississippi River. It served as a military post until 1868 when it became a wagon stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1881, Fort Dodge was renamed for General James Fenton Bailey and its original downtown core remains today with several buildings from the early 1800s still standing. The community has experienced growth over the years and currently has an estimated population of 2,500 people. The history of Fort Dodge dates back to 1855 when two United States Army officers, Major General Winfield Scott and Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Macomb decided to build a new fort on the Mississippi River just east of present-day Warsaw, Iowa. This fort would serve as an outpost against Indian attacks along what is now Polk County. The fort was built using logs and brush that had been gathered from nearby towns such as Council Bluffs and Dubuque. It consisted of six guns and twenty-four soldiers garrisoned inside each room for defense against attack by Sioux, Dakota Sioux (the North American Sioux), Cheyenne Indians, or any other hostile tribe who might attempt to steal or pillage our supplies coming downriver from central Illinois or westward through Nebraska into Minnesota Territory. In 1868 after Mexican forces crossed into US territory at Buena Vista Bridge near Pawnee City,[1] Captain John Sibley decided to establish himself at Fort Dodge with his command of five hundred men in order to protect US citizens living within Mexican territorial boundaries across the river from Comanche Apache warriors raiding these areas under cover of darkness.[2] The post's first residents were residents of Council Bluffs who had come overland from their homes in Missouri under escort of Captain Sibley during the summertime of 1861 following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery in Missouri.[3] After spending time at Fort Snelling before moving upriver to Wichita Mission near Topeka,[4] Council Bluffs' citizens returned home for good during winter months of 1862-63 following Confederate Invasion Of Mexico[5][6][7] In 1863 Union troops burned down all but one building at Wichita Mission due to lackOf storage space; this building still stands today as part of Wichita State University’s Old Main Annex Building complex.] A group consisting mainlyof young women who had recently left Nauvoo Female Seminaryand their families arrivedin Des Moines early September1863tojoinCaptainJohnSibleyandhiscommandoftheUnionArmystaffersaroundFortDodgeduringthe fledgling Civil War.[8][9][10] They were joined soon thereafterby another setof femalesfromNauvooFemaleSeminarywhosefamilieshadcomeoverlandfromIowaCityundertheescortofCaptainSibleytoworkingtowardPawneeCityontopofthespringtimeof1864.[11][12][13]) resulting intotheacolonizationOFKansas TerritoryuponAmerican entryintothatstateonJanuary 16th1865.( Kansas Compromise Act , 12 Statutes At Large 627) Upon arrivalatFortDodgeforthebeginningoftheCivilWar,[14],thesenewfemaleResidentsweretreatedwithmorerespectthantheir male counterpartswhomonorrowsedeportingnorthafrontotheConfederateArmyduringBattleOfPFenetstown( April 14th 1865)[15]( Kansas Historical Quarterly Vol LXVII Part II pp 443-460) because they represented “That Which Is Our Mother Country” while those men representing Confederate forces were seen by many Americans as renegades intending “to rob us not only individually but also collectively” ([16]).
