In 1861, Fort Dodge became the capital of Des Moines County and was designated as the seat of government for all of Iowa under Governor Jonathan Buell’s administration. There were many challenges awaiting Des Moines County when it took up residence in this newly created county; one major challenge was having enough funds to support both its government operations and infrastructure needs such as roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, etc.. Overcoming these obstacles required cooperation between various individuals and organizations; some examples include the donation by local farmers of land to make way for public buildings or donations from wealthy citizens who saw potential applications for their generosity within county borders.
