The city batteries continued to be used until 1915 when all but one of them were replaced by howitzers due to deterioration of their magazines. In 1916 Fort Dodge became part of the newly created First World War United StatesArmy Expeditionary Force during which it served as an ammunition depot for troops going into battle overseas. After the war ended in 1918 it reverted back to civilian use again before being abandoned again in 1920 because of budget cuts which led to its abandonment once more in 1930.
