Fort Dodge was a fort built in 1837 by the U.S. Army to support the Iowa Expedition against the Sioux and Cheyenne. The fort served as garrison, supply depot, and military post until it was abandoned in 1845. The fort is now a park located in Muscatine, Iowa. The Fort Dodge site has been occupied by various human settlements since at least 12,000 years ago. The first permanent European settlement in present-day Iowa was made by French fur traders on the confluence of the Missouri and Cedar Rivers in 1763. In 1824, General William Henry Harrison's army burned down an ancient Indian trading post at what is now Fort Dodge. In 1840, President James K. Polk authorized the erection of a western military base at Fort Dodge for use by the Union forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). On December 7, 1840, General Order No. 2 established seventeen posts around town: six for infantry and seven for artillery fire control purposes only. For several years thereafter, Fort Dodge functioned as an adjunct to Mill Creek Arsenal northeast of Des Moines while also hosting public meetings and other functions at City Hall on Market Street near today's intersection of Seventh Avenue and First Street NW.* On July 26th 1861*, four days after Confederate soldiers under General Sterling Price sacked Fort Sumter* south of Charleston* in South Carolina*, Ulysses S Grant ordered Colonel Augustus Keogh *of Company D2/4 Illinois Volunteer Infantry* to take command of all American military forces east of Omaha City Nebraska*. As part of this overall effort to suppress Confederate resistance within Union Territory*, Keogh immediately moved his company from West Point Junction Indiana into eastern Iowa Territory via Council Bluffs Iowa on August 3rd 1861*. At that point Company D2/4 had grown from fourteen men strong to over one hundred men*.* On September 9th 1861*, two days after Keogh arrived at Ft Dodge with his unit, he took possession of its buildings which included barracks (mainly used as a hospital), storehouses (used for ammunition storage), blacksmith shop (for forging cannons & rifles), millrace (a watercourse used primarily for irrigation), cisterns (for drinking water), jail cells (#5 - #8) and arsenal consisting mostly of 1st US Artillery guns captured from Confederate forces retreating towards Harlan County Kentucky *. On October 1st 1861*, Company D2/4 relieved Companies A1&A2 / 32nd US Infantry Regiment garrisoning Pawnee Hill Louisiana attempting to march thence towards Chattanooga Tennessee under orders from Gen Robert E Lee but were instead turned back near Fayetteville Arkansas due mainly to lack thereof uniforms suitable for duty *.* By November 8th 1861*, there were still no uniforms available so Captain John Ladd took command OF COUNCIL BLUFF IOWA RANGER Troop G1/27 Missouri Volunteers having previously commanded Company A3 / 34th US Infantry Regiment stationed at Council Bluffs Nebraska *.* Haviland McCurdy *Captain 3rd United States Artillery Battalion*/ Lieutenant Colonel with rank Of Major attached thereto / commanding officer Post Ville du Lac Michigan volunteers assumed command November 20th 1861 when Captains Willcox & King parted company en route Memphis Tennessee during battle off Chickamauga Mountain vs Sherman Hood *** It should be noted that while much detail about early Fort Dodge history can be gleaned through oral tradition or personal interviews with individuals who lived there then or continue to do so today [*], written records are more reliable sources providing detailed accounts both chronicling events occurring withinFortDodge itself as well as surrounding areas such as West Point Junction Indiana where Company D2/4 originated (*), Council Bluffs IA where they camped before moving further into present day Iowa Territory ('til later relocated back East **), and Harlan County KY where they initially campsite prior marching towards Chattanooga TN under orders from Robert E Lee but were ultimately turned back near Fayetteville Arkansas due mainly lack thereof uniforms suitable for duty [***]. In addition important historical documents include troop muster rolls dating back to 1862 listing both Captain John Ladd’s “Company G1/27” Missouri Volunteers[†] along side other units stationed nearby including “Captain Willcox”[™]’s “Company B3 Unit 33rd US Infantry Regiment”[††] [*],and finally Orders issued throughout November 1861 listing changes taking place withinthe force including Commander Augustus Keogh being elevated FROM COLONEL TO CAPTAIN [**]'s Headquarters detachment becoming known as Command Post Detachment #3 'til February 1862 when responsibility transferred once again across street signs next door @ Seventh Ave NW continuing until March 1865 when it became Headquarters detachment once again associated with newly reorganized 4teenth Cavalry Brigade ['#' following original brigade number which is still extant]); furthermore many photos & artifacts currently housed inside Park have been taken directly from these various sources listed above making them easier to research especially given their current location inside Muscatine IA.)
