In 1876, the fort was relocated from Scott’s Landing to Fort Dodge. The new location allowed for better gun grease storage and disposal. The first lubrication guns were installed in the arsenal in 1877. In 1907, the fort was decommissioned and its troops moved to State Capitol Park. The old armory building remained in use until 1951 when it was torn down to make way for a new high school. The old armory building is now a museum.

After India’s independence from British rule in 1947, Fort Dodge played an important role again during the Indian Wars that followed; it housed up to 10,000 soldiers and civilians at any one time and participated in several battles against Native nations including those fought at Waco (1836), Monterrey (1839), San Jacinto (1846), and Blue Springs (1859). In 1862, when Confederate forces occupied Fort Dodge during the American Civil War, it quickly proved to be inadequate for their needs; within two years it had been abandoned completely and Converted into a Merchants Bank which closed its doors circa 1904 however reopened 1945 under new ownership becoming Wells Fargo & Co.. Over time various businesses have thrived inside this former Union CityBank complex such as KFC who opened their first store here back on November 15th 1959 followed by Sears Roebuck / JCPenney who opened their first location adjacent to Sioux Falls Mall on October 9th 1962 making this one of only 2 locations east coast US still open 24/7!
