Fort Dodge, Iowa was founded in 1847 as a trading post by Colonel John H. Smith and his brigade of soldiers from the United States Army under General James K. Polk. The post became an important U.S. military base during the Indian Wars and saw action at Sacagawea's Last Stand, Red River Campaign, Black Hawk War and Battle of Little Big Horn. Today Fort Dodge is a popular tourist spot with its large Union Pacific Railroad depot dating back to 1881. The first guns used in the American Revolution were made in Fort Dodge by Captain John Cook of the British Royal Navy's HMS Beagle shipwrecked on the Iowa coast in 1778-79. In 1836, Captain Amos Kendall purchased land adjacent to what is now Fort Dodge for $2,500 from French Canadian trader Édouard Clouet de la Villere. He named his new purchase "Iowa" after France's King Louis-Philippe (I). The fort was built along the Des Moines River between 1847 and 1850 as part of Major Josias Crapo's Second Brigade of the First Infantry Division under General Winfield Scott Hancock. After Iowa became a state in 1912, it organized its own militia regiment known as "Iowa Militia." In 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early burned Fort Dodge while advancing southward through Iowa toward Missouri City; this disaster encouraged many Iowans to join forces with Union troops against Confederate forces throughout much of that year. That same year, Sioux Chief Crazy Horse led a group of warriors against Ulysses S Grant’s army near Council Bluffs; about 25 Dakota Indians were killed or captured when Crazy Horse’s force attacked an encampment near present-day Waterloo Hills east of Dubuque Junction on October 16th only days before Christmas.[1] This event helped spur General George Meade’s decision to march on Minnesota rather than pursue Early across Iowa Territory which would have resulted in some 4 million Indian casualties total if he had pursued him into Illinois Territory (now Minnesota).[2] During World War II, Ft Dodge played an important role as one of three main airfields supplying Occupied Europe with planes used for Operation Overlord (the invasion and landing operations leading up to World War II). As part of wartime restrictions placed upon America by Congress following Pearl Harbor, all ammunition must be transported through Great Lakes states only including IA; this led to shortages at Ft Douglas Ammunition Depot resulting in numerous civilian deaths due to fire caused by overloading trains transporting ammo destined for Europe.[3] In 1945 both Ft Douglas Ammunition Depot closed down completely due to lack of any other physical means for storing munitions after Manassas Arsenal Ammunition Storage Facility also failed during that year’s war.[4] Upon endofwar shutdown both refineries were destroyed[5].
