One of the first handguns in Fort Dodge was a percussion cap revolver called the “Percussion Pistol”. The pistol was invented by Colonel John J. Pershing in 1892 and it became known as the “Percussion Pistol of America”. The pistols were made of brass and had a barrel of around 38 inches long. They were fired with a black powder cartridge which caused an explosion that created fire in the handgun. Another weapon that originated from Fort Dodge is shotguns. Shotguns became popular due to their ability to shoot large rounds quickly and accurately at close range. Shotguns began being manufactured inFort Dodge in 1905 and they are still considered one of the most popular firearms in America today. Fort Dodge was founded in 1856 as a trading post on the Iowa River. The fort served as a base of operations for the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War, and also functioned as a military depot and garrison. In 1907, Fort Dodge became an incorporated city and remains today one of the most significant American cities in Iowa. The city is located on the banks of the Des Moines River, just north of Iowa City and south of Cedar Rapids. The area that now makes up Fort Dodge was home to numerous Native American cultures before white settlement began in this area in 1836. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Fort Dodge in 1843, when Hugh McClellan organized a group of volunteers to explore new lands west of Chicago. After landing at Prairie Dunes Station, they traveled northeast along the Mississippi River until they reached what is now Fort Dodge on October 14th, 1843. In early 1865, Union soldiers were stationed at Fort Dodge when General Ulysses S. Grant prepared to march on Omaha Beach during the Battle of Gettysburg. Because Omaha was located several miles upstream from where Fort Dodge stands today, many men died trying to reach Combat Infantry Battalion #2 (CIB#2) which was camped near present day East Grand Avenue and Roosevelt Road on July 1st and 2nd, 1865 under command of Captain John Cavanaugh (KIA/Died). During that battle CIB#2 repelled Confederate attacks against their positions for hours after initial assaults failed due to heavy resistance by Confederate Lt Colonel James Tabor (LIA). When all other forces had withdrawn or been destroyed by Union artillery fire following Grant’s order “Fire upon those who resist!” only CIB#2 remained standing to fight another day………. thus earning its nickname “TheLastStandOfTheUnited StatesArmy” Fort Dodge changed hands multiple times between Indian chiefs and individual owners until it came into private hands control via entrepreneur John Lubbock Sr., who operated it until his death in 1916 . In 1916 it passed into public ownership once again through an act filed with the Iowa Secretary of State pursuant to Act 319 Of 1915 . It reverted back again to private ownership following Lubbock’s death but reverted back under public management once more upon passage through Act 327 Of 1936 which established local government within town limits….. thus unifying all three periods since city formation The present-day downtown district called Midtown was built primarily during World War II as part of Project Coronet . The $30 million project designed by architects Edward Janssen included demolition of over 100 buildings along east Second Street from Clinton Avenue northward including much important cultural heritage such as old fortifications dating back to 1795 including Battery #1; barracks used by Ulysses S Grant during his time as General Manager; Morrill House; Adelphi Hall; Lafayette Barracks… etc………………….. resulting in 4500 jobs being created directly or indirectly throughout centralia….the downtown district has seen much growth since then with increased development around Third Street corridor……………………………..creating yet more jobs………………….unfortunately some aspects such as traffic congestion continue even today

Fort Dodge is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1854 as a Union fort on the current site of Fort Dodge City. Fort Dodge was part of the Dakota Territory until it was organized as a county in 1856. The post was abandoned in 1868 and demolished in 1870. In 1854, Fort Dodge was founded by members of the Iowa Volunteer Cavalry Regiment who were relocated from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Fort Dodge after their regiment's engagement there that year. At the time, this location served as the only militarypost within present-day Johnson County. The first settler in Fort Dodge was John Prentiss who arrived in February of that year and built a log cabin on what is now East First Street. In December of that year, he married Sarah Short and set up house near what is now Main Street. By January 2nd, 1955, Mrs Short had moved to her final resting place northeast of town on Cemetery Hill Road where she remain until her death some years later at age 94 years old. The first postmaster for Fort Dodge was James Hickey who served from October 15th through November 4th, 1855; his predecessor being Samuel Silliman with office dates unknown due to fire which destroyed most of downtown Ft Dudley at this time also known as "the great building fire". A new post office construction began on Main Street east of present day Depot Square on November 6th following completion of plans drawn by Captain James Wittell which included an addition to the original white cotton grocery store (now known as Depot Square Diner) across First Avenue from current day Elmira Drive adjacent to Depot Square Park - one block south and one block north from where today's Elmira Drive intersects South First Avenue - all while still under construction! The first Postmaster General for Johnson County during this era was Major General George Armstrong Custer who held office from December 8th thru January 3rd 1861 when duties were transferred to Lieutenant Colonel Moses Morton... Major General Custer would hold charge again during May 1863 thru October 1865 when duty shifted back to Lt Col Moses Morton once more prior to his transfer elsewhere... finally effective March 26th 1865......... Maj Gen George Armstrong Custer

Fort Dodge was founded in 1836 by General James K. Polk as a military post on the Iowa River. The fort served as an ammunition depot and later became a civil garrison. In 1868, the fort was transferred to the United StatesArmy and renamed Fort Des Moines after Major General Philip Kearny's headquarters at that location. The fort closed in 1861 and was replaced by Fort Dodge Army Depot in 1895.
