It is also significant that Fort Dodge played an important role during both world wars; since 1945 it has been home to various military units stationed there including Army Air Forces Station West Point (1947-1948), United States Marine Corps Base Anaconda (1972-1985) and United States Coast Guard Station Ft Worth (1998-2002). Additionally, many agencies which operate within or outside Des Moines County are headquartered at Fort Dodge - such as DPS (Des Moines Police Department), UIUC Extension Service (University of Iowan Campus), American Legion Post #813(Anderson Park) and Friends Temple Beth Elohim Congregation(Moses Hirsch Building)). In addition to its history as a military installation and cultural landmark, Fort Dodge has also been usedfor educational purposes. Since 1984 it has been home to both Henryetta High School District’s East Side Academy(Classroom Level: 9th Grade – PreKindergarten/ Kindergarten thru 8th Grade)and Midwest Area Career & Technical Center which offers vocational training programs throughoutianthe county.(High School Level: 9thGrade – 12th Grade).
