During its heyday, Fort Dodge was one of the most important towns in eastern Iowa. Today, it is a ghost town situated near Cedar Rapids. The history of Fort Dodge begins with General John Mason's arrival on the Iowa River in 1820. Heading westward from era-old Missouri City, Indians were attacking settlers along the riverbanks and Mason decided to build a fort to protect his people and trade goods with them. The fort was named for Colonel James Kappes, who donated land for it. Mason's garrison size varied over time but typically consisted of about 40 men under command of an officer. Development of Fort Dodge proceeded smoothly for several years until September 1830 when Indian raids began again along the river banks. This attack resulted in the death of five settlers and damage to many buildings including barracks, stores, and cannons. To prevent further attacks against his people, General John Mason ordered his men not to venture out onto the open ground beyond their walls at night anymore; this policy later became known as "fortifying" or "fortifying our city." With more than 800 soldiers garrisoned within what is now downtown Fort Dodge (excluding adjacent farms), General John Mason led a successful effort to repel any potential threats posed by neighboring tribes during this period of significant growth in central Iowa! By 1840 however, Indian hostilities had quieted down somewhat which allowed for increased development around Fort Dodge without constant danger or threat from hostile natives. In 1846 Major Timothy Jarrard organized a force consisting mostly volunteers from surrounding counties into an attempt to quash an uprising led by Chief Black Hawk that took place near North Platte County line; after fierce skirmishes lasting days culminating with Battle Creek Bridge being burned down leading uprivernear present day Waterloo JunctionJarrard successfully suppressed this uprising which helped solidify Des Moines as the new Territorial Capital! During these times there were few opportunities for civilians living within range of military installations outside central IA so much so that some residents opted not even bother coming inside during these tense times! As development progressed northward away from central IA outsiders started coming into town seeking opportunity while others chose to stay behind fearing possible hostility should they leave without orders! Today 7 miles southwest of downtown Ft dodge is where all original buildings except cannon still stand today just waiting for restoration
