The following year saw another major clash between American forces and Native Americans when Captain John Dickey’s detachment attacked six hundred braves led by Chief Washakie at Dark Hills outside of Fort Dodge on October 9th. Although this battle resulted in fewAmerican casualties (only three men were taken prisoner), it did serve as an important signal that violence against Native Americans would no longer be tolerated
