In 1924, Dubuque, Iowa native Harry Weisbach developed the first ever optical accessory for a watch. Weisbach's invention, the Weisbach Disk Watch Box, was designed to keep time on a watch by reading tiny light discs that were projected onto the face of the watch case. The discs could be rotated to read different times and were also used as calendar indicators. Weisbach's Disk Watch Box is considered one of the most innovative watches ever created and is still in use today. In 1969, Swiss-made quartz movement manufacturer Rolex introduced its own version of the Disk Watch Box called the Daytona. The Daytona featured a rotatable disk with 10 different time zones on it that could be used to display local or international time at various locations around the world. Heading up that growth has been Stan Kroenke who bought 160 acres adjacent to downtown for $10 million back in 2007 which he redeveloped into an art district known as "The Hub" During this time Dubuque also experienced some high profile relocations including Sears Center moving from Hoffman Estates IL to Milwaukee WI; KFC moving from Missouri City TX to Arkansas MD; Jiffy Lube moving from Sterling Heights MI to Clawson MN; Menards going from Cedar Rapids IA to Arlington TX; Wacoal leaving Wichita Falls TX for Des Moines IA Dubuques growth has not been without controversy however with redevelopment projects often displacing low-income residents along with jobs creating large gulags of unoccupied housing units dubbed "The Ghetto." There have also been occasional outbreaks of violence or vandalism targeting businesses near popular cultural destinations such as Regal Cinemas or IMAX cinemas located near neighborhoods considered slums by local officials
Dubuque was founded in 1847 as a small town in the Black Hills region of western Iowa. The town grew rapidly and changed its name to Dubuque in 1871 after becoming an incorporated city. In 1907, Dubuque became a state capital and has since been the most populous Iowa city by population.
