Dubuque, Iowa (1847-1924) was a town in Dubuque County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in Dubuque County. Dubuque was laid out in 1847 by Captain James Wilkinson and his party of settlers under the auspices of the Illinois Central Railroad. The town center was located on the east bank of the Des Moines River just upstream from where it flows into the Missouri River. It took two years to build a stockade around what would become Dubuque's central business district and another two years to put up a schoolhouse and other buildings for its citizens. In 1851, when Iowa became a state, Dubuque became part of Waterloo Township. The settlement grew rapidly due to production of corn and other crops on nearby homesteads and ranching by early residents. In 1858, when Waterloo Township was merged with Clearwater Township, Dubuque joined that township as well; however, it continued to develop slowly until after World War I when an influx of refugees caused growth rates to quicken again. A post office called Dubuquesville had been established in 1852 but failed to take off because there were no people living there; hence, it was renamed Dubuquer City in 1862. A new post office called Pointe du Lac opened on December 8th, 1865; however, it also failed to take off because there were no passengers coming through that point from outside of Canada or elsewhere during that time period so it reverted back to its original name in 1966. On March 14th 1898 – just one year after opening – Pointe du Lac replaced Live Oak as the first permanent station on the Iowa State Railroads system between Cedar Rapids and Des Moines/Iowa City Junction; this madePointe du lac headquarters for all rail traffic going southward from Cedar Rapids through Des Moines Valley until Cedar Rapids re-opened its own station four months later on May 3rd 1899 at which time Live Oak resumed its role as headquarters for all northbound traffic entering/exit points within city limits). The initial development plans forDubuoecity outline a mix of single family homes with attached garage spaces or apartments being built along arterial streets while more developed neighborhoods would be created further inland along current U S Highway 83 including areas accessed via freeways such as Interstate 295 or Interstate 80 which provide easy access without having to go through downtownDubuoecity like most cities do today! Today’s skyline features traditional brick architecture plus high rise condominiums & apartment complexes making this one large city!
