In 1912, Sheppard donated all of his property including his building on First Avenue to the city for use as a public park known today as Sheppard Park. During World War II, local businesses became involved with supplying munitions for military purposes (most notably Best Western Hotel). Accordingly, several businesses within walking distance of each other were converted into ammo storage sheds or magazine warehouses for storing materials such as rifles and pistols awaiting shipment overseas. The first stop on the Burlington-Dubuque Railroad was at Huggins' cabin. In 1845, James Guthrie arrived and built a sawmill on the west side of town. The village of Fenton began to form around this mill site with buildings made out of logs thatched with straw for insulation against the cold winter months. By1853, all but two blocks of downtown were developed as a small town with taverns/stores/cafeterias/libraries etc., while another block east became known as "the Slough" due to its rich agricultural land used by farmers for sloughing off their crops before they could be processed into foodstuff or sold elsewhere. By 1861, when Iowa became an state, Dubuquese had reached 10 miles (16 kilometers) long by 5 miles (8 kilometers) wide and contained 350 residents; it included four blocks of downtown including State House Square which had been renovated as a public square in 1915; two churches – First Presbyterian Church (now United Methodist), also now part of City Hall; one school – School District No 1 North (now Ankeny Elementary School); one branch library – Illinois & Atlantic Railroad Library; three stores - Gee's grocery store (later Jarden’s grocery store), Wigglesworth’s bakery and meat market; one doctor - Drury Mclntyre; three whitesmiths - Josiah Strongsmithing Co.; one blacksmith - Andrew Prentice & Sons forge shop; two wagonmakers - Lewis Whitney & Son wagonmakers'; five blacksmith shops - Blacksmith Shop No 2 south sidewest corner Main Street between Second Streets and Third Streets corner opposite First Streets on West Sideof Town
